Patti Moran McCoy Jazz and Blues Concert
The Havurah Synagogue is hosting Patti Moran McCoy in a special jazz and blues concert on March 24, 7:30 PM.

Ms. McCoy has lived in southern Oregon since the early 1970’s. She has appeared on the original Tonight Show with Steve Allen when she was a teenager, and recorded with Duke Ellington. She recorded for Mel Torme on Bethlehem records, the top jazz label in America at that time. She retired from the hectic world of music in her 30’s and settled in southern Oregon where she raised her family. At the urging of the late Robin Lawson, Steve Sacks and David Zaslow brought her out of retirement when she organized the opening night concert at Jazmin’s Cabaret, Ashland’s legendary jazz club in 1977. She has recorded several jazz and gospel CDs and was the recipient of the American Book Award for Educational Materials in 1987 for her work on the album Shakin’Loose with Mother Goose featuring Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows rapping traditional children’s rhymes set to Ms. McCoy’s jazz and blues.
The upcoming concert at the Havurah features six top flight musicians and two gifted vocalists. Rabbi David Zaslow says “Patti is really a national treasure. I have her permission to tell you that she is 82 years old. She plays like a 30 year old, and most importantly her soul and grace are beyond the way we count years.” The evening’s music will feature four of her own adult children: Sean and Theresa McCoy on keyboard and percussion, as well as vocals by Gabe and Kelly McCoy. The band also features Denny Massoff on drums, Nick Garrett Powell on guitar, and Adam Boyd on bass.
Ms. McCoy says, “This band is very different from any other I’ve had. I’ve never had a guitar player, and the whole rhythm section is basically rock. So, we’re combining three types of music – jazz, blues, and rock. It’s lots of fun and a new experience for me personally.” The concert was originally performed on November 18th at the 40th anniversary Jazmin’s reunion. It was such a success that many people in the audience said they’d come a second time if the concert were ever produced again. David Zaslow says, “The concert was so much fun in November that we’re doing it again!”
