Wednesday, 5/11/22, 5 PM via Zoom

Legitimate Criticism of Israel vs. Antisemitism: When Does It Cross the Line? In this presentation, you will learn how to determine when criticism of the State of Israel crosses the line into antisemitism. We will examine the “3-D Test” and see how it is expressed in the internationally-accepted IHRA definition of

antisemitism. Lastly, we look at some criticisms of Israel and discuss whether these are legitimate or antisemitic and why. Participants will leave with a much better understanding of how to respond to difficult comments more effectively.

Aviv Attia

Aviv Attia, 28, is a Mizrachi Jew born and raised in Tel Aviv. Like many Israelis, Aviv’s family had centuries of history in the Middle East before moving to Israel. His father’s family lived in Spain for centuries but were expelled to Tunisia following the Alhambra Decree in 1492. After centuries in Tunisia, they were forced to flee to Israel in the early 1950s.

His maternal grandparents were Iraqis from a successful family in Baghdad, and part of the oldest Jewish community in the diaspora. In the early 1940s, they escaped to British Mandate Palestine because of terrible antisemitism against them and their businesses. They were forced to leave all their property behind and begin a new life in their ancient homeland.

Aviv had a typical suburban upbringing. At age 18, he began his mandatory service in the Israel Defense Forces, serving in the C4I corps (Command & Control, Communications, Computers and Information corps). In this unit, he became a communication technician, operations manager and commander. He received awards for leadership and earned an early promotion. Aviv’s military service was spent in the north of Israel along the border of Lebanon and Syria.

After his IDF service, Aviv enrolled at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, where he was selected for the Rabin Leadership Program, a prestigious project that prepares participants to take leadership roles in shaping Israel’s future. He also joined the StandWithUs Fellowship gaining knowledge and training in the field of public diplomacy. In 2019, Aviv graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Government, Diplomacy, Strategy & Sustainability, and began working for StandWithUs.
